How to make yourself look good on paper (resume writing)
Step 1- Brainstorm! Think about
- Your interests and hobbies
- Your skills
- Your career goals for the next 5- 10 years
- Some good interests to have (or say you have) are team sports, community service/volunteering work, some sort of public speaking club (toastmasters)/debating and travelling
- Some good skills to have (or say you have) are communication skills, typing skills, general computer skills, customer interaction skills, patience and motivation.
- Some good career goals to have (or say you have) are securing a position in the industry you want, promotion and/or some sort of leadership role in your industry.
Your resume needs to contain:
–Personal details
–Education details
–Extracurricular activities- sport, volunteering, clubs,
–Work experience- makes sure it demonstrates how responsible you are and how well you work in a team
–Achievements- leadership, academic, sports, writing, singing ANYTHING!!
–Interest in organisation and industry you have applied for
Your cover letter needs to contain:
• A brief explanation of why you are writing to the company and specify which position you are applying for
• A summary of your key skills and qualifications
• An explanation as to why you have chosen that employer
• Thank the potential employer for taking the time to read your application
• To link your resume to their position and most importantly,
• To highlight why you are a fantastic candidate!
• Make sure it is addressed to the right person and company!
